During the past few months Dr Swart performed an awake craniotomy for a patient - but what made it different this time round was that the patient was assisted before, during and after surgery by Dr Elmari Craig. She used a number of modalities but especially clinical hypnotherapy to help support the patient during the process. The patient could even phone his wife during the operation! The success of the surgery and positive experience of the patient and his family proved the impact of an integrated, multi-professional team approach.
Another first at Cintocare Hospital was a DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION (DBS) procedure performed by Dr Swart. DBS is a neurosurgical procedure that involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of the brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses. It is often used to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease.
